Principal's Blog Autumn Term

Dear parents and carers,

We have a new look, and a new outlook!

We're looking forward with confidence as we start the new academic year.

Our first-ever set of exam results, A-Levels and GCSEs  demonstrates the significant progress we have made this year. We have very high expectations for our current Yr11 and Yr13 students and they both years have already demonstrated some excellent outcomes in external assessments including maths and electronics for Yr 13 and engineering for Yr11.

The new Yr 10s and 12s have made a very productive start to the new year:
Yr 10 have already started their first employer project working with Public Health England to design a hand sanitation unit for use in developing countries. Nigel Silman from PHE came into the UTC to launch the project with the students and is very much looking forward to working with them to see the range of outcomes produced as the project progresses over the coming weeks.

The Learning Companies house system, which is being supported by DSTL, Chemring, The University of Southampton, QinetiQ and the Royal Navy, has been launched and the first stage will the appointment of the 'Student Directors' for each company. Students have been invited to apply and will go through a range of selection panels before we appoint the successful candidates into these very important roles.

As you know, our aims at the UTC are:

  • To make sure that students achieve outstanding academic results
  • To make sure that students gain experience and skills in preparation for University and Work

To these ends we have made some exciting new appointments that I am pleased to share with you:

Mr Scott has joined the senior leadership team with a specific focus on developing teaching and learning and our reporting programme. Mr Scott comes from a secondary teaching background and brings extensive leadership experience to the team.

Mr Collis has joined the engineering department. Mr Collis comes from a secondary teaching background and is a specialist in D&T and Electronics. Mr Collis will also support the running of our CCF (Combined Cadet Force).

Lisa Lucas has joined us as our exams and data manager and will be working with Mr Scott to ensure that parents receive regular progress updates throughout the year.

We also would like to welcome Hannah Gillard as Finance Assistant; Sue Marshall who will be joining our student services team; Russell Kirby and Jerry Leamiham who are now employed by the UTC as our site team; and Tempany Donnelly, Zoe Hopkins, Sara Short as our cleaning team.

Best wishes,

Joe Mulligan
