Eleanor Aiming High with RAF
Year 11 student, Eleanor, joined South Wiltshire UTC in Year 10 because of its STEM focus, having always loved the engineering side of things.
Eleanor is currently studying her GCSEs in triple science, English language and literature, engineering, electronics and computer science.
Eleanor said: “In traditional schools, there isn’t as much focus on technical subjects and it’s hard to find anywhere that offers anything beyond basic product design.”
“I came along to an Open Day at the UTC and got a really good feel for what life was like here. I am pleased I joined – the class sizes being smaller is a great opportunity for us to be visible and get more from the whole learning experience. You wouldn’t get this elsewhere.”
“The teachers are also really good here as they are more specialist and know a lot about industry. On top of that, you have the amazing facilities, as if you are in the workplace.”
“My future plan is to join the RAF. I am hoping to join Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College after my studies at the UTC, and eventually train as an officer in the RAF, following university. I have had a lot of support from the UTC with my next steps and they have assisted me with applications and references, which has been really helpful. The work experience I have had here, having had the opportunity to work with lead partner QinetiQ for one week, also helped me with my application to Welbeck, as they ideally wanted a connection to a MoD site.”
